Home Match, Anglian Combination Division 1 - 2015 - 2016
Win, 4 - 3
Well, what a day at Hempnall. The return of Paddy and his lads was always going to be a severe test for Hempnall, and whilst Greg was able to compile a strong squad, there was only one substitute due to absences through work, injury and other commitments.
The BRF were treated to an exciting, end to end, game, which Hempnall deservedly edged 4-3.
The home crowd were silenced and left bemused when a defensive error left the excellent finisher, Roy Bevis, to slot the ball in the back of the Hempnall goal for 0-1.
Hempnall came alive, forcing corners, and the Sheringham goalkeeper fouled a Hempnall player and the resultant penalty was slotted home well by Slater.
Another defensive lapse saw Sheringham edge ahead 2-1, Hempnall responded with Goddard well positioned to make it 2-2, and we knew then that Hempnall stood a good chance of getting points against a well drilled Sheringham side.
The second half saw Sheringham score a third, but then Kelly really come alive, and he and Slater in particular were causing major problems for Sheringham.
Hempnall were on top, and after a good attacking move, Kelly swept in a fine finish for 3-3, and a few minutes later, repeated the trick with his second and Hempnall's fourth.
After a tricky beginning of the season period when results were not as good as they could, or should, have been, this match showed a great team spirit and no lack of skill.
A great result for Greg and the lads to carry forward to the next game, a Senior Cup fixture against Wymondham Town.
