Hempnall F.C. Reserves v F.C. Viking First (Sat)

Report By Trevor Shurmer (Club Secretary)

Saturday, 07th January 2023, 2PM, at PLAYING FIELD HEMPNALL

Home Match, Barnes Print Central & South Norfolk League Division 2 - 2022 - 2023

Draw, 3 - 3

Hempnall welcomed FC Viking to a windy Bungay Road, for their first match is a month following the Christmas break.

With a strong wind at their backs, Hempnall were very slow off the mark, unable to get into their stride, and the Hempnall keeper was called into action early on and had to make a fine save to keep their scores level.

Hempnall were playing, by their standards, poorly for the first half hour, and conceded two goals, with only Keane offering any meaningful threat to the opposition until Hempnall started offering a real threat with all of the players improving as a unit.

Keane broke the Hempnall duck with a good run and finish, though shortly after, a finish from the Hempnall number 9, Joy, was ruled out for offside.

The game was far more even by half time, and the second half saw intermittent improvement from the home side, but they were unable to maintain a threat, and were caught out once more by the fast running Viking forwards, and a third goal seemed to seal the match.

However, Hempnall were not to capitulate, and after the opposition keeper made a save, Keane was there to mop up and score Hempnall’s second.

Viking hit the woodwork twice before Keane was upended in the penalty area, and he converted for 3-3.

After that, the game could have gone either way, but Viking were finishing the stronger but Hempnall held out.

Whilst a poor performance, the team showed character and fight, and can be pleased to have secured a point under the circumstances.

Viking must have felt unlucky not to have taken all three points.

Hempnall had a few decent performances today, with the goalkeeper, Ryan, generally looking very secure, though for his all round effort and scoring a hat trick, my MOM is Keane.
