Hempnall FC

Hempnall fielded a decent looking side, hoping to improve upon their recent string of lacklustre performances. Perhaps today was the day when the tide would turn, albeit in a cup match against a side they had not faced before.

They managed a much improved performnce but still lost 2-4, largely, in my view, due to the opposition having the game’s outstanding player (their number 10).

We were, though, treated to a very decent game, mostly end to end, but a much tighter defensive and midfield display in the first half saw Hempnall go 1-0 up through an excellent very narrow angle free kick by Drake that popped into the corner, but the customary lapse then let the opposition in to level.

Just after half time saw an excellent finish by Way for Hempnall to lead 2-1.

Also, again, refereeing decisions went against them, a couple very unusual ones that left Hempnall feeling frustrated.

The first was a rather soft penalty (to say the least), though Davis saved the shot which rebounded from the bar for the number 10 to score.

Then Hempnall scored a scrappy goal thinking it was 3-2, for the goal to be wiped out for something it seems was brought to the attention of the ref as the players were assembling for the re-start.

Whilst the game was played in a generally good spirit, the frustrations were building up.

Both goalkeepers were in regular action, both pulled off good saves, and neither could be blamed for any of the goals.

For a substantial proportion of the match, it looked as though Hempnall would secure the win but after going down 3-2, and seeking an equaliser, up popped the number 10 again to finish and send Hempnall back to the dressing room feeling rather unlucky.

Hempnall are still waiting for the tide to turn after again probably shading the match.

Ah well, that’s Hempnall’s luck at present. It will change.

All of the performances today were decent, a MOM is difficult to pick but I feel for his general contribution, Jimmy Edwards is my pick.
