Hempnall First Team v (HT 0-0)

Home Match, Almary Green Anglian Combination Division 2 - 2016 - 2017

Loss, 0 - 3

With Hempnall needing to win to virtually guarantee second division football next season, but knowing that defeat would see them needing to win their last game by at least as many goals as a defeat today, the squad Dimsey put out looked capable of beating a Wells side themselves low on confidence.

The manager changed some player positions with Talbot leading the line, and both Lambe and Kelly playing more advanced roles.

For the first half, Hempnall were easily the better team, manufacturing a number of very decent chances, shots from a number of players including Bliss, Stockell, Lambe, Kelly to name a few, went close but none were put away.

Spillings, in goal for the injured Hemmings, was largely untroubled, thanks to him for coming out of retirement in our hour of need.

0-0 is always a troublesome score, giving the opposition confidence. Still, in the early part of the second half, whilst not dominant, Hempnall had another few half chances or decent attacks again where the final ball was either not good enough.

Then came the customary lack of concentration and the inevitable happened, Wells should have scored but good and brave defending and excellent goalkeeping kept the scoreline clear.

A warning not heeded. Hempnall’s season long problem of vulnerability to the simple ball over the top was again exposed twice in quick succession, and from being comfortable, Hempnall found themselves two down.

Wells then secured a third, with Hempnall spurning their few chances to reduce the goal difference.

Hempnall really only have themselves to blame for this defeat, they looked the better team for the most part but a lack of a cutting edge was, in the end, their downfall.
