Hempnall FC

Hempnall Res entertained St Andrews Res in what turned out to be a close encounter, in a hard fought but fair match that the supporters enjoyed on a freezing cold afternoon at Bungay Road.

Hempnall expected a tough encounter, and with players missing, and a couple getting injured during the match, the expectation materialised.

Hempnall welcomed back Andy Talbot into the squad, he fitted into the team as though he had never been away.

Hempnall looked the better side in the first half, and excellent finishes by Adams and Lambe saw them go into half time 2-1 up.

St. Andrews reorganised a bit at half time and looked much stronger in the second half and came back to 2-2.

Hempnall still maintained a threat, and a third goal from Jones saw them edge into the lead, but sustained pressure from St. Andrews kept the Hempnall defence under the cosh, and they eventually equalised.

Excellent goalkeeping from Ayton kept St. Andrews at bay, and they were unable to convert a few chances and half-chances, though Hempnall remained competitive and had a few half chances of their own.

The second half injuries to key players was worrying the Hempnall manager, and it was with some relief that the final whistle blew.

We are hoping that the injuries are not severe, as the team has certainly turned a corner, and can now compete well in the Division.

Finally, I would like to say how well the game was refereed by Mr. Reed – we can all 'question' some decisions, but the way he treated the players was man management at it's best. In a 3-3 draw, not to have to book a player, showed a firm grip.

Also, thanks to the excellent St Andrews lads and officials, staying afterwards and making it a very pleasant occasion for all.
